Welcome to Barbados! One of the best ways to experience our beautiful island is by renting a vehicle and exploring it at your own pace. From breathtaking coastal drives and historic Bridgetown to hidden beaches and scenic countryside roads, driving gives you the freedom to discover everything Barbados has to offer.
Driving in Barbados is generally straightforward and enjoyable, even for first-time visitors. While we drive on the left-hand side of the road, most visitors become comfortable within a short time. The island has a well-maintained road network, clearly marked road signs and friendly drivers who are accustomed to sharing the roads with tourists.
Before beginning your journey, it is important to familiarise yourself with Barbados' driving laws, road signs, speed limits and local driving practices. This guide has been prepared by MasterDrive Car Rentals Ltd to help ensure that your visit is safe, enjoyable and stress-free.
Whether you are travelling for business, a family holiday, a romantic getaway or an island adventure, we hope these driving tips help you make the most of your time in Barbados.
Drive safely, enjoy the journey, and welcome to Barbados!
During your first few minutes of driving, simply remind yourself to "Keep Left." Most visitors find that it quickly becomes second nature.
Before entering a roundabout:
✔ Slow down and observe the road signs.
✔ Choose the correct lane before entering.
✔ Give way to vehicles already in the roundabout approaching from your right.
✔ Never stop inside the roundabout unless it is necessary to avoid a collision.
✔ Stay in your lane while travelling through the roundabout.
✔ Signal left immediately before taking your exit.
Larger Barbados Roundabouts
Some larger roundabouts in Barbados, including the D'Arcy Scott Roundabout and Garfield Sobers Roundabout, have additional lane markings and directional arrows.
Always follow the road signs and lane markings at these locations, even if they differ from smaller roundabouts elsewhere on the island.
MasterDrive Driving Tip
If you miss your exit, don't panic.
Continue around the roundabout and safely take the next exit rather than making a sudden lane change or abrupt turn.
Driving calmly and predictably is the safest option for everyone on the road.
Always obey posted speed limit signs and adjust your speed for road conditions.
